You cannot avoid a security deposit while renting with Getaround

You cannot avoid a security deposit while renting with Getaround. When you book a car on Getaround, a security deposit is always blocked at the time of payment. The amount of this deposit we require depends on the car category and the details of your car rental. It is displayed on the booking page and can be lowered by choosing either the "Plus" or "Premium" protection plan options (when available).

Rentals & Payments: Additional information on the security deposit

Once you've booked and paid for your car rental with Getaround, the security deposit is blocked as per our policy. The security deposit is automatically released 7 working days after the end of your rental hire, provided no incident has been reported by the car's owner. In case of cancellation, security deposits are released immediately.

Once we release your security deposit, your bank will process it and clear your bank statement generally within the next 10 working days. Please note that some banks can take up to 30 days.

What happens next? Pay for damage or fees

We may debit the deposit on your card in the event of damage to the vehicle or to cover additional fees such as late return, extra mileage, or cleaning fees.

Our terms state that if the vehicle's owner reports an incident, the security deposit will be blocked for a short period (typically a few additional days). This is to give our team an option to investigate if they need, to make an informed decision. You will be notified by email if this is the case.

To check the release date of your deposit, please refer to the rental page in the app.
