Why do I need to verify my profile?

Profile verification is a mandatory step to be covered by insurance and to allow you to access cars on Getaround.

This rule applies to all types of rentals (Getaround Connect or meeting the owner in person), as well as if you wish to be added as a secondary driver.

When and how do I verify my profile?

Verification is done exclusively on the Getaround app as soon as you send your booking request (and sometimes it may be required beforehand).

Go to the "Account" tab in your app, and click on "Verify my profile".

You can also access this from your rental page once your booking is confirmed.

💡 Our advice: Start the verification process as early as possible to avoid any last-minute stress.

Which documents do I need?

Have your original documents ready. Photocopies, screenshots, or reports of lost/stolen documents will be systematically rejected to prevent fraud and identity theft.

  • Your driver's license: Take a photo of the front AND the back of your license.
  • Your ID: Depending on the issuing country of your license, you may be asked to photograph your national identity card or your passport.
  • A video selfie: Simply follow the instructions provided by our live face-camera verification system.

Renting with a Norwegian license? Your profile will be verified using BankID. No documents required unless you plan to rent a car outside of Norway.

Renting with a license issued by a country outside of the Schengen Area? Additional documents are required by our insurance. Check out our dedicated article: Renting with a foreign license.

Please note that in some cases, we may request additional documents to verify your address or your payment method.

How long will it take to verify my profile?

You will receive a notification and an email as soon as your profile is approved or if we need an additional document:

  • In less than 5 minutes (automatic verification): This is the case for the vast majority of profiles.
  • In less than 2 hours (manual verification): If your documents are not clear enough for automatic verification, if additional documents are required, or if your profile has already been automatically rejected several times, our team will take over. We verify profiles 7 days a week, from 8 AM to 11 PM CEST.
  • In less than 30 minutes (imminent departure priority): If your rental start time is coming up, your profile is processed as a priority.

What should I do if my profile is rejected?

Check the reason for the rejection in the "Account" tab of your app (or in your emails), then restart the verification process after correcting the issue.

Avoid common mistakes by checking these 5 key points:

  • The driver's identity: All submitted documents must be in the name of a single person, matching the Getaround account holder.
  • The right document: Make sure you upload the correct document. For example, do not send your ID card if your driver's license is what is being requested.
  • Validity: Your documents, as well as your right to drive, must not be expired.
  • Framing: Document must be fully visible. All 4 corners must appear in the image, with no parts hidden or cropped out.
  • Readability: The photo must be clear. Avoid blurriness, shadows, and reflections by taking the photo in a well-lit area.

Technical problem while uploading documents?

If the app freezes or gets stuck when taking or uploading photos, try these three quick steps:

  • Allow camera access: Check your smartphone settings to ensure you have given the Getaround app permission to access your camera.
  • Update the app: Try uninstalling and then reinstalling the Getaround app.
  • Switch devices: If the problem persists, try logging into your account from a friend or relative's smartphone to complete the process.

Is departure approaching and you're still stuck?

If your departure is imminent and your profile is still being processed or is blocked, don't hesitate to contact our customer service so we can assist you.

Note: If your profile is definitively rejected (for example, if you are unable to provide a mandatory document), the owner will unfortunately not be able to hand over the vehicle. You will then need to cancel the rental(option available at the bottom of the rental page). Rest assured, in this situation beyond your control, you will be fully refunded.

How long does my verification remain valid?

Once approved, your profile remains verified for 3 years.

This duration may be shorter if your license expires in the meantime, or if you modify your personal information on Getaround.

Once this period has passed, you will simply need to complete the process again.
