To rent a car on Getaround, you need to meet certain conditions so that your trips will be covered by insurance.

You must:

  • Be at least 19 years old
  • International drivers as well as drivers from HI and AK, and AB, BC, MB, NL, NT, NU, PE, QC, SK, and YT in Canada must be at least 25 years old
  • Have a valid driving licence for the country in which you’re renting, including the original document (copies, declarations of loss, or provisional licences are not accepted). If you have a foreign licence, there may be additional requirements. More information here
  • Can pay for the rental with a credit card in your name
  • Be present for the checkin and the checkout
  • Verify your profile, more information here
  • Have no more than two violations or accidents combined in the past three years
  • Have no major violations in the past three years. Major violations are defined by state law and may include driving with a suspended or expired license, providing false or counterfeit documents, and engaging in speed contests
  • Have no alcohol / drug related incidents in the past seven years
  • Have a high Auto Insurance Score
  • Drivers under age 21 must have a clean driving record (no violations or accidents in the last three years).

Drivers under the age of 25 are required to pay a young driver surcharge:

  • Drivers aged 19–20: $50 per day
  • Drivers aged 21–24: $30 per day

Documents to be presented at the start of the rental

For all rentals on Getaround, you will need to ensure that your license has been validated by Getaround before starting the rental.

Key Exchange (Meet the Owner) rentals

Even though your profile must be verified by Getaround before you can begin your rental, you will still need to present the original of your driving license (no photocopy or declaration of loss/theft) to the Owner during the checkin process.

Can I use a declaration of loss / theft or copy of driving license to rent?

Without your original driving license document, you cannot rent. Declarations of loss, preliminary licenses or copies of the driving license are hence not allowed. You have to cancel the rental and warn the owner as soon as possible.
