How do payments work on Getaround?

When you book a Getaround Connect car or a Meet Owner car with instant booking, you’ll be asked to pay directly during the booking process, for rentals where instant booking is not enabled you’ll be invited to pay after the owner has accepted your rental request and in order to finalize your booking.

When you make a booking, your bank or card issuer places a payment authorization (“hold”) that temporarily blocks the amount (the rental amount and the security deposit). We only capture the payment at the start of the rental, or before the authorization expires (up to 30 days after booking), whichever comes first.

You may see that the authorization has expired, or the line has disappeared from your bank statement before your rental has started, however rest assured, you will still be able to see your rental in your upcoming rentals and there is no action required on your side to rebook or reconfirm your rental.

You can find more information about how this impacts refunds in case of cancellation here.

Which payment methods are accepted to pay for a rental?

Accepted payment methods:

  • Mastercard

  • Visa

  • Visa Electron

  • CB (Carte Bancaire)

  • Corporate card

  • PayPal (only in Germany and Austria)

All payments are secured via 3D Secure protocol. If your card is not compatible with 3D Secure, you will not be able to complete your booking. In this case, we recommend contacting your bank to activate this feature.

Refused payment methods:

  • Checks

  • Cash

  • E-cards

  • Prepaid bank cards

  • Nickel cards

  • Maestro cards

  • KBC cards

  • PayPal (only accepted in Germany and Austria)

  • American Express cards

Can I pay the owner directly instead of paying on the site?

No, it is mandatory to pay via the Getaround platform. This ensures that your rental is covered by insurance.

If an owner asks you to pay outside the platform, you should inform us immediately as this is a violation of the terms of use, and you will not be covered in case of any problems.
