Understanding Auto Insurance Score (AIS)

Article updated on 12/24/2024

Starting January 6th, 2025, drivers with a low Auto Insurance Score (AIS) will no longer be eligible to rent car on our platform. Below, we explain what AIS is, why it matters, and what you can do if you believe your score is inaccurate.

What is an Auto Insurance Score (AIS)?

AIS is a score provided by the credit reporting agency TransUnion that predicts the likelihood of a driver filing an insurance claim. It is calculated using a combination of factors related to your credit history and driving record.

While AIS is not the same as a credit score, it incorporates similar elements to evaluate financial reliability and responsibility as a driver.

Why is AIS important for renting on Getaround?

At Getaround, we are dedicated to creating a safe and reliable car-sharing experience for everyone. Your AIS plays a key role in helping us assess risk and uphold the safety of our community. Drivers with higher AIS scores are more likely to demonstrate responsible financial and driving behavior. By introducing this criterion, we aim to:

  • Protect vehicle owners from potential risks
  • Keep protection plan costs low for the Getaround community
  • Foster a safer and more reliable car-sharing environment

What should I do if I’m deemed ineligible due to a low AIS?

If you believe the AIS we received from TransUnion is incorrect, you can dispute it directly with TransUnion.

Once your Auto Insurance Score has been updated, you may submit the corrected score to us for reconsideration of your eligibility.
