As of 01/05/2024 Getaround is suspending operations in the United Kingdom.
Effective May 1st 2024, Getaround will be voluntarily suspending its operations in the United Kingdom after careful consideration.
This is largely due to the increasing motor insurance costs.
Our marketplace is built on flexibility and choice and we do not believe that we are able to offer the experience our community in the United Kingdom deserves at this time.
No. This closure only affects the United Kingdom, we are still active in Europe in Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Norway and Spain, as well as across the United States
Despite pro actively pursuing various options to continue operating in the United Kingdom, we have been unable to overcome the challenges faced by the insurance climate. We understand that this is disappointing and will be disruptive to our community.
Connect Installations that have already been scheduled in the United Kingdom will be cancelled.
Drivers have been notified of the market closure, rest assured that if a rental started before May 1st and has an end date after May 1st it can still go ahead as planned, and will still be insured.
We are working diligently to address all outstanding claims and will continue to work closely with you to resolve them. You can still contact your claims manager with any questions you have about your ongoing claim.
If your car is equipped with Connect technology, you can either choose to:
list your car on Hiyacar’s platform and have their QuickStart technology installed. If your car meets their eligibility criteria, Hiyacar’s team will take care of uninstalling the Getaround Connect technology and installing their own technology.
uninstall your Getaround device. You’ll soon receive an email with our partner’s contact information to uninstall your device.
In both cases, you have until 31/05/2024 to uninstall the Getaround Connect technology. After this date, if it has not been uninstalled, it will be deactivated and a penalty fee of £50 will be applied.
Your Connect subscription will automatically end on 30/04/2024.
Once your last rental has ended you can resume locking and unlocking your car with the key as normal. We will be deactivating any remaining Connect devices on 31/5 for all cars that have not yet been uninstalled, so you can still continue to use the lock and unlock feature in the app.
You have up to one year to submit your infractions after the relevant rental has ended, we advise you to process any infractions as soon as you receive them to ensure that you are refunded you can read more about infractions in our Help Centre article here.
